When a client has C. diff (aka Clostridium difficile) its a very challenging (a lot of suffering and constitutional weakening) illness. The majority of my clients who died in the hospital died with, or soon after having, a C. diff infection.
Although common in our culture, C. diff may sometimes be dismissed as "just a tendency to diarrhea". There are preventive measures for C. diff and these are not always well followed in Triangle area facilities.
The NY Times reported a promising C. diff treatment, bacteriotherapy, by Dr Khoruts. His therapy used a spousal donor. The sine qua non is patient receptivity, their deep belief that the process and donor are beneficial.
